MBR (or Master Boot Record) is the most fundamental component of a computer system. It is usually the first sector of your primary hard disk and is intended to perform certain critical actions, including bootstrapping the operating system, etc. It includes a partition table that contains significant information about all the partitions on your storage device. MBR also has a 32 bit disk signature that uniquely identifies your hard disk. However, MBR is easily vulnerable to damage or corruption due to various virus attacks, hardware errors, power surges, etc. As a consequence, the system becomes unbootable and you lose access to the valuable data stored therein. To overcome this problem, you need to go for Windows data recovery through a reliable third-party utility.

Suppose you have Windows 7 installed in your system. You encounter serious problems when you try to boot the system as the first sector on your active partition is corrupt. Now, if you use the Startup Repair tool, it shows no issues with MBR.

Cause

The above error occurred because you have inserted a USB drive in the system. Sometimes, your computer interprets it as the system partition. So, now if you use System Repair utility, it does not find MBR on the USB drive and hence reports no errors.

This would render your system unbootable and lead to serious data loss. In such circumstances, use a backup to restore all your lost or inaccessible data. However, if the backup is unavailable, you should follow the below mentioned resolution steps.

Resolution

Try the procedure described below to resolve the problem-

Detach the USB drive from the computer.
Restart the computer using the Windows 7 bootable DVD.
Press any key on the keyboard if prompted.
Select language, currency, time, input method etc. and click ‘Next’.
Choose ‘Repair your computer’.
Select the Windows installation that you need to repair and then click ‘Next’.
In the ‘System Recovery Options’ dialog box, select ‘Command Prompt’.
Run ‘Bootrec.exe’ or ‘fixmbr’ command to fix MBR.

If you still face problems while booting your system, format the hard drive and reinstall Windows. As the formatting process would erase all the data present on the hard disk, use competent Windows recovery software to effectively recover the entire hard disk data.
